After rebuilding the kernel without the serial module, I am still running
into trouble. When rt_com_setup calls 'check_region()', I am getting an
error as if something else is there. Is there a way to find out and disable
whatever else may be using the same region that rt_com is trying to use?

Thanks, Rich
