Uh oh. For starters, configure a kernel with the absolute minimum set of 
drivers and features you need. Use a small, debug stripped libc "replacement" 
(such as those used on single floppy systems), and generally try to chop away 
any debug info or other extraneous data.

If you're still having problems, watch the console while booting and try to 
track down where time is spent - it might just be some driver or service that 
fails, and takes some time to give up.
