Thanks to everyone for the Ethernet infomation.  FYI - the socket that the
Linux is connected to is on a Windows 98 machine, which I am supposedly
closing correctly.  I will get a chance to try the suggestions and read and
I'll let everyone know what I've found.  It may be a month from now, but
eventually I'll get to it.

especially
paragraphs 4.1, 2.7 and 4.5. They might explain what you are seeing and
offer a
solution (4.5) to your problem.
