for this you need 2.4.0 kernel (2.4.2 will fail)

Ok, I was maybee not clear. Sorry.
The kernel_patch_2.4 can only be used with 2.4.0 kernel. NOT kernel 2.4.x in
general.
There have NOT been made a patch for the redhat 7.1 kernel 2.4.2
The redhat kernel is not a clean kernel, but have been patched with some
other stuff. It may bee a good ideer in generel, but not when you have to
make your own kernel.
You have to download a full kernel. I suggest 2.4.4, and I olso suggest you
to download the new rtlinux-3.1.
>From this you can patch your kernel.
The reason way I suggest you to get rtlinux 3.1 is that some minor stuff
have been fixed. (fx the makefile includes version control)
There is a good instruction have to build your system in
rtlinux-3.x/doc/html/Installation/
One more thing. You HAVE to install kgcc insted of the standard gcc compiler
in redhat 7.1.
