It is imperative that you select the correct Linux kernel for the patch to
operate.

You mentioned that the Linux kernel you selected is v2.2, but you have to be
more specific (e.g., the latest Linux v2.2 kernel is 2.2.20).

If you open and inspect the patch file (something like 'kernel_patch-2.2'),
from line #5 you'll see something like:

     ... blah blah ...
     VERSION = 2
      PATCHLEVEL = 2
      SUBLEVEL = 18
     ... blah blah ...

This means that the Linux kernel version 2.2.18 that can be patched by this
patch file. Please make sure that this is the Linux kernel you have
downloaded.

The patch command should be invoked from the directory containing the Linux
kernel v2.2.18 source tree (e.g., in /usr/src/linux-2.2.18). Finally, along
with this, the patch level (defined by the 'strip' prefix -- "p") should be "1"
(e.g., patch -p1 ).

My recommendtionis: Dispense with the Linux kernel v2.2.x and go for the main
event -- Linux kernel version 2.4.4. In fact, RTLinux v3.1 is ready to patch
Linux kernel versions 2.2.19, 2.4.0-test1, and 2.4.4.

This should bring you success! This is soooooo cool! Have a nice day!
