An "Uninterruptable" Power Supply (UPS) provides battery power to systems
for a limited time when the wall socket fails.  Many have
an alarm which can be fed to the OS.  Under Linux, this allows the
machine to tidy-up and run shutdown.  You might want to check-out:

Also, i think some folks are trying to resolve the problem with filesystem
structure.  I don't have any info, but if you see some, please send it
my way.

A program called expect was written by Don Libes an NIST to address
your problem.  expect is built on TCL and TK, and provides a wonderful
capacity to automate interaction with programs which demand to talk to
a human.  Further info can be had at:
