Weekly Updates (May 2, 1998)

1. Brooke Wallace < brooke@qualcomm.com> released a version 0.04 of the RT
manual on April 14, 1998.

2. Olga Mill received a "Letter to Editor " from Paolo Mantegazza
<mantegazza@aero.polimi.it > regarding an IPC subsection in RT Manual.
____________________________________________
Dear Olga,

I saw a tentative IPC paragraph in the RTLinux manual and I'm wondering
what is it for since there is no such a service now.
In my variant of RTLinux I implemented a full set of IPC services,
including messages, rpcs, semaphores and the basics for intertask
signals but even the couple of friends using it do not use them.
So the question is:
- is there something I'm missing about RTLinux?
- are you just hoping for such features?
- are you assuming that sometimes some form of IPC will be in the
official release ?
- waiting for the new 2.2.xx version with semaphores promised by Victor
- waiting for somebody to add those services in the present release
along with the documentation?
- is there the need for them?
I understand that the above question are somewhat heterogeneous but I'd
like to know why you hinted that content for the manual.
Ciao, Paolo.

Here is my answer :
Linux supports a variant of System V IPC that provides a form of
an inter-process communication : semaphores, queues, and shared memory.
All of this seems relevant to RT Linux, however, since I have not dealt
with IPCs myself, and I can not tell for sure who proposed this RT Manual
chapter, I wonder if anyone from RT user list can answer Paolo ?

Should we keep this section in the RT Manual ( currently it is under a
a header "Extensions and Enhancements to Standard Base Line "?
And if we do keep this section, "Who can write about IPCs in RT?"

3. I have one more proposed chapter :
  RT Programming Techniques
	1. C++  constructors/ destructors

If you are willing to write some documentation on C++
constructors/destructors (and even more), please, e-mail to
omill@rtlinux.cs.nmt.edu

4. If you want to write some RT Manual documentation, but you are not sure
about your English, we have a team that can proofread an Englsih
version of a document and give a feedback.
We even have interpreters that may help with translating
from Spanish, French, and Russian into English.

If you decide to write in a language that is not English, please, e-mail
a note to Olga Mill.

Sincerely,
