I apologize for streaming such a dumb question to the list server...

It appears that Oleg was right on target. I neglected to install
Debian's kernel-sources package somehow -- and managed to check it off
on my list of things to do in preparation for this task. Ouch.

Sometimes public humiliation is the most effective of the hard ways to
learn a thing. Guaranteed I won't forget this one -- might even put it
on my headstone.

Thanks to all who pondered this on my behalf. I'll give it a whirl now,
and I'm betting that it works much better when applying a patch to a
file that really exists. Now all I have to do is remember where I left
those asbestos undies... ;)
