You should check out the Video 4 Linux interface that is currently under
construction by Alan Cox.  They have some really cool stuff that will be
built into the 2.2 kernel.

you can find him at... www.linux.uk.org (or similar).. look under 'what
Alan is hacking now...'

There is a mailing list with a lot of good information (including early
releases of API documents) and I can send you my archive.
