[rtl] 2.1.90 w/ SMP 1.2a dies on bootup

I patched 2.1.90 with rtlinux-SMP-1.2a and everything compiled
correctly. Then "make modules" and "make modules_install". I
installed the new kernel and tried to reboot on my Intel N440BX with
dual PII-400s. I get "uncompressing kernel" then "booting kernel",
then about two screens of text messages, then the screen goes black
and the system reboots itself.

How can I go about debugging this? The screen messages scroll too
fast to read.

The system was originally Redhat 5.1. I have some questions about
lilo.conf and the files in /boot.
What is the file System.map-2.0.34-0.6? Should I update it somehow?
What does "initrd=/boot/initrd-2.0.34-0.6.img" do? Should I remove
this line from lilo.conf, or update the file?
What is /boot/module-info-2.0.34-0.6?

In the SMP FAQ it says to "enable RTC support" but doesn't say how.
Could this be relevant? The FAQ also says to turn APM off - I don't
see any entry in the system's BIOS setup program for APM. How do I
know if it is off?
