I've been through all these problems before. A couple of years ago when I
first
started using SanDisk parts I experienced this particular problem. I even
spent
some time at SanDisk with a guy in there lab. The problem is some
funkiness in
their IDE protocol when acting as a slave with most or all other hard
drives as
the master. Check the rev of the controller chip, maybe there is a later
rev.
I can't remember whether I ever got the SanDisk slave config working
properly.
We had sophisticated IDE protocol analyzers attached and could see the
problem.
The guy indicated that it should be fixed soon... but I guess they never
got around to it.

I'm surprised SanDisk doesn't mention this problem. They certainly knew.

You can however have the SanDisk as a master with another drive as the
slave.
On machines with a single IDE interface this is the only way speed
filesystem
development except for network booting which I also used.

Hope this saves some time for you.

Regards,
Mike Cruse.
