Red Hat has patches (not necessarily big ones, maybe just bugfixes) in 
many components.  Typically if you pull the source code from the
source CD, you get the original unpatched source (in a .tar.gz file)
plus a set of patch files.  Anything that depends on clean source has
to be applied to the original sources, not to those as patched.

If you install "kernel source" from the binaries CD I believe you get
the sources as patched.  I don't remember if you can get the unpatched 
kernel source from the source CD.  In any case, it's easy enough to
fetch from kernel.org...
