[rtl] Emdedded linux ramdisk boot problems

Hi all,

I'm sorry for an off-topic post, but was hoping someone on this
list might be able to help with a problem booting to ramdisk.

I've gone through Paul Moody's tutorial on booting using an initrd
to create a root fs on a ramdisk from a compressed root fs stored
on a flash drive. Currently I'm just using a partition of an IDE
HDD to simulate the flash, in order to get the procedure working
before introducing actual flash into the equation.

Anyway, what I am getting after my linuxrc gets executed is some
sort of primitive single user mode. Here are the messages just
before the prompt for that mode comes up:

  eth0: ...
  Partition check:
    hda: hda1 hda2 ...
RAMDISK: Compressed image found at block 0
EXT2-fs warning: mounting unchecked fs, running e2fsck is recommended
  VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem).
Freeing unused kernel memory: 40K freed
  #

where the "#" in the final line is of course the root prompt for the
primitive single user mode, which I mentioned previously. None of the
usual commands (even the basics like "ls") work, so it isn't really
possible to even determine what's been mounted or how far the process
has gone...

If anyone can see my problem immediately on looking at the output, I would
very much appreciate any quick suggestions on what to try next. In
the meantime I'll keep reading additional docs and continue trying.

Thanks for any ideas,
